Flipboard

This is the app that uses up half of the battery life on my iPad (the other being Words with Friends). Flipboard is billed as "a new approach to browsing social content" - a magazine-format aggregator for your mobile device. What?

It collects the content of various sites (including Facebook and Twitter, but I really like the news portions) and allows you to swipe the pages to browse the content which is beautifully laid out. It's quite intuitive, and I can lose track of time while flipping through the pages.

Documentaries

While H was spending a long weekend umpiring in Oklahoma City last weekend, I decided to get caught up a little bit on my Netflix streaming queue.  I watched five documentaries, three worth blogging about. My favorite one, Chops, is about a high school jazz band preparing for a major competition.  I wrote more about that one on my music blog on Monday, June 25.

Last year sometime I heard Kevin Clash on NPR's Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me. He is Elmo's puppeteer, and when I saw that there was a documentary about him, I thought it would be worth watching. It most certainly was. Being Elmo is about as charming as you might imagine.

For some reason I had a documentary in my queue (perhaps it was suggested by Netflix, I'm not sure) entitled Bill Cunningham New York. Not really knowing anything about it except that Netflix thought I would rate it a 4, I started it up and then found out it was about the photographer for "On the Street" in the Sunday NY Times. These are the photos of people who are wearing similar kinds of clothing. Bill  Cunningham rides his bike through the streets of NY looking for style and taking photos on the fly.  I also recommend this film about an interesting character.

So, when the heat gets to you this summer, three recommendations for ways to amuse yourself.

Sunday in Claremont

This morning our first Sunday NY Times arrived on our doorstep. We are missing the Chicago Tribune and couldn't stand the Sunday LA Times (all 10 minutes of reading it), so we are trying out the NY Times Sunday edition. It took me over an hour to get through the magazine, so I think next week I'll save that for last and let it last more than one day. I think if I can get past the bits of "LA is so inferior to us", I will really enjoy this little luxury. I am still trying to get the LA Times to deliver M-F to us, but I might actually have to talk to a real person to make that happen. I could be okay without it, but Hal has to have his fix. I'll read the comics.

After starting the morning paper, I took myself down to church for our annual patriotic Sunday, and it was great to see so many people again. After the service the church had a picnic, so I could actually socialize to my heart's content (or until everyone went home).

Next Sunday I'll actually go to the Farmer's Market! (And Liesl will probably go with me!)
