Elephant-Toe Curbs

New curb by Sycamore Elementary
Old curb on left/New curb on right
When Claire was in 3rd grade, her teacher took their class on an historical walking tour of Claremont where she learned that this style of curb (currently being replaced throughout the Village) were called Elephant Toes.  I thought I could find out more about this kind of curb on the internet, but the only reference I came up with was from the City of Claremont website (below) in their definition page for the Claremont Village Expansion Area Specific Plan page.  Has anyone seen these kinds of curbs elsewhere, and do you know what they are called?

When I remarked about these interesting curbs when we first moved here, I was told by someone in the church who was a longtime resident that these were made using the rocks that would come washing & rolling down the streets when there was no San Antonio Dam. These tall curbs were built in order to keep the water in the streets and out of the yards and homes.

Xandie and I some similar "kerbs" in Australia; I should have taken a pic. My guess is they are European in origin...?
