I heard about the Southern California author, Susan Straight, a few years ago, and someone from my book club loaned me
Highwire Moon, a National Book Award Finalist. Susan Straight lives in Riverside and actually in the neighborhood of Ley Yeager (Vista's recently retired principal). He has met her. So, with this familiarity, I was ready to like this book. Although I did finish the book, I can't say that I particularly liked it. The story revolves around an illegal immigrant Mexican Indian woman and her American-born daughter who are separated and then try to reunite years later. However, the characters seem very flat to me, not three-dimensional, the story told in a clinical, and somewhat overwrought manner, if that makes any sense. You can
listen to Straight read from the book here.
